Its sources lie in the Pekhu Kangri range (Langtang Himal) in Tibet, where the Kyirong Tsangpo and Lende Khola rivers merge near the Nepal-Tibet border. A Nepalese legend attributes its source to the Gosainkunda high in the Himalayas, where Lord Shiva struck the ground with his trident (trishula), giving the river its name.
