Ghorepani Poon Hill

Ghorepani (2,874 m), a timeless Magar village wrapped in ancient rhododendron forest and drenched in Himalayan light, is one of Nepal’s most beloved mountain settlements, where blue-roofed stone lodges spill down a high ridge beneath the ever-present silhouette of Dhaulagiri and the entire Annapurna massif. Famous as the gateway to Poon Hill (the planet’s most iconic sunrise viewpoint), Ghorepani glows with prayer flags, the scent of juniper incense, and the laughter of porters and trekkers swapping stories over hot ginger tea after the long climb from Ulleri.

In spring the surrounding hills explode into a red sea of blooming rhododendron; in autumn the air is so clear you can see five 8,000 m peaks at once. At dawn the village empties as hundreds make the 45-minute torch-lit pilgrimage up to Poon Hill, then return to steaming plates of apple pie and panoramic balconies. By night, wood stoves crackle, stars burn holes in the sky, and the wind carries distant flute melodies from the forest. Ghorepani isn’t just a stop on the trail; it’s the beating, high-altitude heart of the Annapurna foothills, where every sunrise feels like the first one the mountains ever gave the world.
