Your 8-day Upper Mustang Overland Jeep Tour is designed to be a fully supported, hassle-free adventure, covering all mandatory expenses and logistics from the moment you begin the mountain drive. Crucially, the package includes the entire journey’s land transport in a private, comfortable 4WD Jeep, ensuring you traverse the rugged, high-altitude terrain with ease.
The largest component of the cost covers the required government special fees: the mandatory Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), which grants you legal access to this exclusive region. Throughout the main tour—from Day 2 to Day 7—your full board is covered, encompassing daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided by the traditional teahouses and lodges, ensuring you are well-nourished on the trail.
Accommodation during the Upper Mustang section is provided in the best available clean teahouses or local lodges, offering simple but comfortable rooms, typically on a twin-sharing basis, while your stays in Pokhara will be in standard tourist-class hotels. The experience is professionally managed by a licensed, English-speaking local guide and a dedicated driver, with all their costs, including salary, meals, and insurance, taken care of. Furthermore, the package includes complimentary initial arrival and final departure airport transfers in Kathmandu, use of a comprehensive medical kit, and optional access to sleeping bags and down jackets if needed. All necessary government and local taxes are also integrated into the price, ensuring no hidden fees affect the core journey.

Adventure
Your journey begins with a scenic drive along the Trishuli River, offering views of terraced hillsides and rural life as you leave the capital city. Upon arrival in Pokhara, you will settle in near Phewa Lake and enjoy the evening, preparing for the mountain adventure ahead.
Starting early, you will take a private 4WD jeep, traveling through the deepest gorge in the world, the Kali Gandaki. The dramatic drive takes you past waterfalls, deep valleys, and traditional Thakali villages, culminating at Kagbeni, the historic entry point to Upper Mustang.
After passing the special permit check post at Kagbeni, the landscape transforms into a breathtaking arid moonscape. The drive today climbs into the restricted territory, passing through ancient settlements like Samar and Syangboche before reaching the village of Ghami, home to one of Mustang's longest Mani walls.
Today is the climactic drive to the fabled capital, the walled city of Lo Manthang. The route crosses dramatic high-altitude passes, offering panoramic views before descending into the fortress-like citadel. You will settle into your accommodation within the historic walls.
Spend the day immersed in the culture of the last Forbidden Kingdom. You will explore the ancient monasteries within the city walls, including Jampa, Thupchen, and Chode Gompas. An optional side trip will take you by jeep to the Chhoser Valley to explore the mysterious Jhong Sky Caves and the Kora La border area.
Bidding farewell to Lo Manthang, the return journey tracks back south. The jeep tour diverts to the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath Temple, revered by both Buddhists and Hindus. After a spiritual visit, the drive continues down to Jomsom, the district headquarters, famous for its apple orchards.
The final and long overland drive begins, retracing the path through the Kali Gandaki Valley. You will pass through Marpha, famous for its apple products, and continue the descent to the lake city of Pokhara. The evening is free to relax and celebrate the completion of the Mustang journey.
Enjoy a final breakfast by the lake before beginning the drive back to Kathmandu via tourist bus. This marks the end of your Upper Mustang Overland adventure.

The maximum altitude is approximately $3870\text{ meters}$ ($12,696\text{ ft}$) when crossing the Tsarang La Pass on the way to Lo Manthang. The town of Lo Manthang itself sits at $3840\text{ meters}$ ($12,598\text{ ft}$).
The altitude gain is gradual, and the highest point is below the dangerous $4000\text{ meter}$ mark, making the risk lower than on higher treks. However, it is a high-altitude trip. We drive slowly, and acclimatization is built into the itinerary. We recommend drinking plenty of water and discussing medication with your doctor before the trip.
Upper Mustang is a restricted region and the government requires a minimum of two foreign trekkers to issue the Restricted Area Permit (RAP). Solo travelers must either join an existing group or pay the permit fee for two people.
The best seasons are Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November) for clear skies and mild temperatures. Importantly, since Upper Mustang is in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, it is also one of the few regions accessible during the Monsoon (June–August), offering an alternative to rain-affected areas.
This is primarily an Overland Jeep Tour. While there is light walking involved for sightseeing and exploring villages (like in Lo Manthang), the majority of the distance is covered by a private 4WD vehicle. It is graded as Easy (Jeep Tour) and is suitable for all ages with basic fitness.
The local currency is the Nepali Rupee (NRs). You should carry cash, as ATMs are rare or non-existent past Jomsom. USD is required to pay the permit fee, and major currencies can be exchanged in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
