The Makalu Base Camp Trek is an exceptional, challenging, and less-traveled expedition into the remote eastern Himalayas of Nepal. Typically taking around 16 to 22 days, it is graded as moderate to strenuous due to its high altitude, rugged terrain, and limited infrastructure compared to more popular routes. The journey begins with a flight to Tumlingtar and then a drive to the trailhead, often Num or Chichila, and progressively transitions from lush, subtropical farming lowlands inhabited by Rai and Gurung communities to the high-altitude, icy landscapes of the Makalu Barun National Park.
We’re committed to offering more than just products—we provide exceptional experiences.
Typically, the trek takes between 18 to 22 days (including travel to and from Kathmandu), with about 14 to 17 days spent trekking in the mountains. The total trekking distance is approximately 150 to 200 kilometers (93 to 124 miles).
The highest point is Makalu Base Camp itself, at approximately $4,870m$ to $5,000m$ ($15,977 ft$). You will also cross the challenging Shipton La Pass at around $4,210m$ ($13,812 ft$).
It is rated as Strenuous / Challenging. It is considered one of Nepal's more demanding base camp treks due to its remoteness, limited infrastructure, steep ascents/descents, and long trekking hours (6-8 hours daily) over rugged, rocky terrain. Prior high-altitude trekking experience is highly recommended.
The two best seasons are: Autumn (September to November): Offers the most stable weather, clear skies, and excellent mountain views. Spring (March to May): Features warmer temperatures and the beautiful blooming of rhododendron forests, though late March may still have some snow at higher altitudes.
Accommodation is mostly in basic teahouses (lodges) in the lower villages. In the higher, more remote sections of the Barun Valley, accommodation is very basic, and tent camping is often required, or teahouse availability may be extremely limited.
Yes, you will require two main permits: Makalu Barun National Park Permit and the TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) Card. While the region itself is not always a restricted area, the remote nature and challenging trails mean hiring an experienced local guide and porter(s) is highly recommended, if not mandatory depending on the exact route taken.
Altitude Sickness (AMS) is a major risk, as is the case with all high-altitude treks. Other challenges include unpredictable weather, the remoteness (leading to limited communication, food, and medical facilities), and the generally rugged, steep trail conditions.
