Rara Lake is famous for being the largest and deepest freshwater lake in Nepal, often called the “Queen of Lakes” or “Heaven on Earth.” Its stunning turquoise color, mirror-like reflections of surrounding snow-capped mountains, and location inside Rara National Park make it one of the most beautiful and untouched destinations in the Himalayas.

Rara Lake is located in the remote northwest of Nepal, within Mugu and Jumla districts of Karnali Province. It lies at an altitude of 2,990 meters inside Rara National Park, approximately 370 km by air from Kathmandu.

There are two main ways:

  • By flight: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (1 hour), then to Talcha Airport in Mugu (20–30 minutes), followed by a 2–3 hour trek/jeep ride.
  • By trekking: The classic route starts with a flight to Jumla (40 minutes from Nepalgunj), then a 3–10 day trek depending on the itinerary. Overland jeep journeys via Surkhet–Jumla–Talcha are also popular but take 2–3 days.

The best time to visit Rara Lake is September to November (autumn) and March to May (spring). During these months, the weather is clear, rhododendrons bloom in spring, and you get the clearest views of the lake and surrounding peaks. Winter (December–February) brings heavy snow, while monsoon (June–August) makes trails slippery and views cloudy.

The popular Jumla to Rara Lake trek usually takes 8–10 days round trip (including 3–4 days each way). Faster itineraries combining flights to Talcha Airport and short treks can be completed in 4–6 days. The full Rara Lake circuit around the lake itself is a relaxing 1-day walk.

The Rara Lake trek is considered moderate. The trails involve gradual ascents and descents with the highest point around 3,500 meters (Ghurchi Lagna pass). No technical climbing is required, making it suitable for fit beginners and experienced trekkers alike. However, its remoteness means limited facilities and the need for proper preparation.
