Ulleri (2,070 m), a sprawling, sun-soaked Magar village draped across a steep hillside in the Annapurna foothills, is one of the most dramatically beautiful settlements on the classic Ghorepani–Poon Hill trail. Built almost entirely of neat stone houses with bright blue roofs and surrounded by terraced wheat and millet fields, it commands a front-row, heart-stopping view of the 7,000 m giants Annapurna South and Hiunchuli that seem to rise straight out of the valley floor just a few kilometres away.
Famous (and feared) for the endless stone staircase of over 3,300 steps that climbs relentlessly from Tikhedhunga through rhododendron and magnolia forest, Ulleri is the first big “welcome to the mountains” test for thousands of trekkers every season. Yet once you reach the top, the village instantly rewards you: warm teahouses with flower-filled balconies, smiling Magar families offering homemade apple raksi, children playing on ancient stone courtyards, and sunrise light that turns the entire Annapurna South wall flaming pink and gold. In spring the hills explode with red rhododendron; in autumn the air is crisp and the sky limitless. Ulleri isn’t just a stopover—it’s the moment the trek truly begins and the mountains start feeling close enough to touch.
We’re committed to offering more than just products—we provide exceptional experiences.
A charming, large Magar village at 2,070 m, famous for its endless stone staircase (3,300+ steps from Tikhedhunga) and sweeping sunrise views of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli.
It’s the “leg-burner” gateway to the classic Ghorepani–Poon Hill trek; almost everyone on the Annapurna Sanctuary or short Poon Hill loop spends a night here and remembers those stairs forever.
Direct, in-your-face views of Annapurna South (7,219 m) and Hiunchuli (6,441 m) glowing pink at sunrise, plus Machhapuchhre on clear evenings—some of the closest mountain vistas on the lower trail.
October–November (perfect clear skies) and March–April (rhododendrons in full bloom along the staircase). Avoid monsoon—steps become a waterfall.
Busy in peak season (you’ll share the stairs and teahouses with 50–150 trekkers), but still relaxed compared to Ghorepani or ABC; early morning and sunset feel peaceful.
The 3,300+ stone steps from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri are steep and relentless (800 m ascent). Most fit people take 2–3 hours; porters fly up in 45–60 min.
Plenty of comfortable teahouses with hot showers, Wi-Fi, and balconies facing the mountains. Try the local Magar apple brandy (raksi) after the climb.
Most people arrive from Tikhedhunga/Birethanti in the afternoon, overnight, and push on to Ghorepani next day. One night is perfect.
The hardest staircase of my life… and worth every painful step for that sunrise view of Annapurna South.”
